The Savoy Hotel is a hotel located on the Strand, in the City of Westminster in central London. Built by impresario Richard D'Oyly Carte with profits from his Gilbert and Sullivan operas, the hotel opened on 6 August 1889. It was the first in the Savoy group of hotels and restaurants owned by Carte's family for over a century. It was also the first luxury hotel in Britain, introducing electric lights throughout the hotel, electric elevators, bathrooms inside most of the lavishly furnished rooms, constant hot and cold running water and many other innovations. Carte hired manager César Ritz and chef Auguste Escoffier, who established an unprecedented standard of quality in hotel service, entertainment and elegant dining, attracting royalty and other wealthy guests and diners. Winston Churchill often took his cabinet to lunch at the hotel. The hotel became Carte's most successful venture. Its bands, Savoy Orpheans and the Savoy Havana Band, became famous, and other entertainers (who were also often guests) included George Gershwin, Frank Sinatra, Lena Horne and Noël Coward. Famous guests have included Edward VII, Enrico Caruso, Charlie Chaplin, Harry Truman, Judy Garland, Babe Ruth, Laurence Olivier, Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne, Humphrey Bogart, Elizabeth Taylor, Barbra Streisand, The Beatles and numerous others. The hotel is now managed by Fairmont Hotels and Resorts. It has been called "London's most famous hotel" and remains one of London's most prestigious and opulent hotels, with 268 rooms and panoramic views of the River Thames across Savoy Place and the Thames Embankment. The hotel has been closed since December 2007 for extensive renovations and is expected to reopen in October 2010. The cost of the renovations was £220 million, as structural problems delayed construction. From Wikipedia under the

Kaspar the black cat, a three foot high sculpture by Basil Ionides, has joined guests ever since he was commissioned by the Hotel in the 1920s. It all began in 1898 when Woolf Joel, a South African guest at the Hotel, gave a dinner party to which only thirteen were able to attend. He laughed off the old superstition that tragedy would fall upon the first guest to rise from such a gathering, and so the dinner continued. His fellows' fears were soon justified however, when Woolf was fatally shot following his return to Johannesburg. When the Hotel received news of the tragedy, steps were taken to prevent any chance of a… [cont.] Answered by amy-in-texas - Fri Jan 12 15:30:38 2007 How long do it take to walk from Park Savoy Hotel In NYC to Time Squre. Subway is right there and there are several buses you can take. Hotel rooms are very small, but clean - good location. A block from Central Park and very close to the Time Warner Building - lots of high end shops - and high end restaurants. Be sure to visit the Samsung Experience - very enjoyable. You can use their computers, cell phones, watch beautiful tvs on comfortable couches. There's a large Sephora, Border's Books. There's a Whole Foods on the lower level - good place to get a snack or get food to bring back to the hotel. Your hotel is near Le Parker Meridian - be sure to get a burger at The Burger Place there - about $5 self service,… [cont.] Answered by gormenghast10014 - Tue Jan 2 10:31:34 2007 How do I get from midtown Manhattan to Yankee Stadium?
Q. I'm staying at the Chelsea Savoy Hotel on West 23rd street, how do I get to Yankee Stadium and back? Asked by lalalaurakins - Wed Apr 23 23:35:27 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Walk over to Park Ave and 28th st and take the woodlawn #4 train up to the stadium. I'd rather walk in the city than from the concourse in the bx to the stadium.
